“If you are marketing to everyone, then you are marketing to no one.” – Me and other wise folk.
If you plan on offering a service or launching a product then chances are you’ve tried to build your tribe, also known as a customer base.
You should almost always build or develop with the consumer in mind. This leads to doing audience research, test trials, beta studies and whatever else you can find out about your potential tribe.
“A good customer buys, a great customer advocates,” – A5
The idea of a tribe in the marketing world paints an image of ferociously loyal people who believe in your brand so much that it requires little convincing of them. Therefore you spend less on advertising dollars and more on product development.
Here are 5 simple ways to build your tribe.
- Listen your friends and family about their problems… It’s called a groaning gold mine for a reason. So try to pay attention and find a solution to their problem.
- Solve an issue that already exists, that others have solved. So, you like to shop but don’t want to go to the store. Why not create an online store that delivers products for people like yourself? There’s always room for another e-commerce giant!
- Create a problem and build a solution. There are cereal bars in the UK that serve American cereals for an upcharge. Well, it wasn’t a problem I knew I had but yeah maybe I do want a $10 bowl of fruity pebbles.
- Pay for research. If you’re serious about getting deep into your potential audience’s mind then paid research is the way to go. It can show things like sleeping patterns, favorite shows, demographic data and more.
- Run a Facebook ad. If you have a product developed and kinda know who your tribe is, then confirm it using Facebook ads. You’ll get valuable demographic data and insights on similar businesses they like.
Bonus: Hire a marketing team to create custom personas and do all the research for you. This sounds straightforward but can be massively overlooked.
